Technology has been and always will be a
double-edged sword. Its' ability to immerse us in a constant stream of
information is both a gift and a curse. Its' impact is nothing less than the
death of boredom. And its' creation has abated the annoying toils and troubles
in our daily lives, but at what cost. What if the nuisances eliminated by
technology were more trails and tribulations that toils and troubles.
Thus are some of the questions that Technology creates.
In answering these questions you must ask yourself
what role technology plays for you. To me technology acts as a diversion, a
tool, and a crutch. Even while I'm writing this blog post I'm listening to
music, watching YouTube videos, and tapping into the infinite source of
information and ideas found online. This exposure to technology allows me to
escape from the real world.
Even though technology allows me to escape from
reality, it also keeps me anchored into my life. I use it to plan my day by
recording homework assignments in my phone, texting my friends to see when and
where we are meeting up, and using the Internet for pretty much everything I
do. This versatility of technology has allowed it to seep into every part of my
life and like a sponge I have absorbed it, using it in any and every way
possible. It's likened to the ultimate Swiss army knife. Adapting to what every
we need it to be and expediting our problems wherever it goes.
Technology, although great, is also addicting. The
same usefulness described above has allowed it to dominate our lives and
cultures. Like addicts we crave it and would go into withdrawal without it. I
know I'm addicted at least. I get irritable out of boredom without its
entertainment, and go out of my way to make sure I have access to my phone at
all times.
This dependency isn't necessarily a bad thing
though. It's having a one-sided dependency with Technology that is harmful. In my opinion you
can never have too much moderation. In technology this moderation comes to
having a balance between using it as a diversion and a tool. Even more
important though is having a balance between the trials and tribulations of the
real world and the toil free/ trouble free world of technology.
