Blog #3: Sydney Smith (Come to the Dark Side, Luke)

"As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away; all alike have become useless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one." -Romans 3:10-12

Good and evil. A long- time subject of debate. What makes something good or evil? Can you be a good person who does evil things? Can you be an evil person who does good things? Most people hold an opinion somewhere in the middle. People don't want to consider themselves completely evil, and rational people recognize that no one is completely good. Therefore, in order to place themselves in a "mostly good" category, most people argue that nothing is absolute. And in this we deceive ourselves. One can't be all good or all evil, we say. Everything is subjective. Just because I do one bad thing doesn't make me evil.

I disagree.

In my opinion, there is a deep- rooted evil nature that befalls every member of the human race. Therefore, in my opinion, no one is any "more good" or "more evil" than anyone else. Our shared sin nature causes us to all be put in the evil category. As the above verse asserts, "There is no one who does what is good, not even one." There is no gray area in this. However, I also believe in absolute good, which I believe is the nature of God. Only through Him are we able to fight our evil nature and do good.

In conclusion, is there evil? Yes; it is displayed in all of us.
But is there also good? Yes; God is good.
